Couple Forcibly Removed from Empire State Building Files Suit
A Muslim couple who claim they were forcibly removed from the Empire State Building for praying has filed a $5 million suit against the historic building’s owners.
The lawsuit was filed by Fahad Tirmizi and his wife Amina against Malkin Properties, the owner of the building, and Andrews International Inc., a private security firm. The Tirmizis allege that security guards at the New York City landmark kicked them out after they were found praying on July 2, 2013.
According to court documents, the couple was on the building’s observation deck with their two children when it came time for their scheduled daily prayers, so they sought out an unoccupied area and began to pray silently.
The Tirmizis claim that security guards interrupted their prayers by poking Fahad and escorting the family out of the building.
