Claims Filed Over Six Washington Mudslide Deaths
Claims were filed against the state of Washington and Snohomish County this week by surviving relatives of six members of one family that were killed in a March 4 mudslide that claimed the lives of 41 people, according to court documents.
The claims were brought by the family of 43-year-old Shane and 34-year-old Katie Ruthven, their two sons, 6-year-old Hunter and 4-year-old Wyatt, and Shane’s parents, 71-year-old Lewis Ruthven and 64-year-old JuDee Vandenburg, who lived next door to each other in the path of the mudslide.
The family alleges that the county and state’s Department of Natural Resources negligently failed to provide adequate warning to area residents of potential landslide dangers.
The claims are seeking an unspecified amount in damages.
