$5 Million Racial Hazing Claim Filed Against California University
An African-American teen has filed a $5 million claim against a California university where he allegedly suffered racial hazing at the hands of his roommates.
The claim was filed internally with the California State University Office of Risk Management against San Jose State University. The student, who was 17 at the time of the hazing, claims the university failed to protect him from racist remarks and pranks by four of his dormitory suite-mates, all white students.
According to the teen’s attorney, his roommates continually taunted and harassed him, hanging up Nazi paraphernalia and a Confederate flag in their suite, calling him racially biased names, and threatening him with a golf club, among other incidents.
The teen informed a student housing assistant about the hazing, but the university failed to investigate the bullying until over a month later.
The teen’s attorney said he plans of filing a lawsuit if the university rejects the informal claim.
