Class Action Suit Targets N.J. Red Light Cameras
Nearly a half-million motorists in New Jersey are poised to receive a settlement from the company that manufactured red light cameras which erroneously issued them traffic tickets.
The lawsuit was filed against eighteen municipalities throughout the state which participated in New Jersey’s pilot red light camera program. The suit alleges that municipal officials did not properly maintain the cameras, which mistakenly sent out tickets to drivers who did not run red lights.
Although all of the municipalities have denied wrongdoing, the manufacturer of the cameras, American Traffic Solutions, has agreed to settle the case for $4.2 million. Under the settlement agreement, motorists who were issued tickets before Aug. 1, 2012, will receive a check for $8.50, a value equal to 10 percent of the $85 ticket they were issued.
A federal judge will rule whether or not the settlement will be allowed during a hearing scheduled for Sept. 12.
