Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced this week that it will be recalling roughly 405,400 vehicles because of a glitch in the airbag system.

The recall includes 342,000 Honda Odysseys sold in the United States and Canada and 63,400 Acura MDXs, which were sold in the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia. The following model years are affected:

• Honda Odyssey model years 2003 and 2004
• Acura MDX model year 2003

According to the recall announcement, a computer chip located in the airbag control unit of the affected vehicles may malfunction, which can cause the driver and passenger airbags to deploy inadvertently.

No crashes have been reported as a result of the defective chips, which were supplied by TRW, but there have been several reported cases of minor injuries, including cuts and abrasions to the hands and fingers of vehicle occupants.

As a remedy, Honda will install an electrical signal filter in the recalled vehicles, which will prevent the “noise” from other electrical systems that causes the computer chip to malfunction.
