3 Dead, 30 Injured in 95-Car Pileup
March 31, 2013
Three people were killed and 30 others injured on Sunday in a 95-vehicle pileup on Interstate 77 near the Virginia-North Carolina border, according to police reports.
The accident occurred at about 1 p.m., when motorists ignored a posted warning to slow down for dense fog ahead.
Vehicles were strewn over a one-half-mile stretch of the interstate, forcing police to close the southbound lanes for nearly 30 miles to allow emergency vehicle access.
Police officers who arrived at the scene of the crash said it was the worst accident they’d ever seen on that stretch of highway.
